Tip Sheet for Leaders: Communicating During Times of Uncertainty
When uncertainty strikes, effective communication is one of the most critical tools for leaders. How do we, as leaders, help our employees navigate uncertainty and maintain morale when we are working through the same challenges? This tip sheet provides practical strategies to help leaders show up for their teams, communicate clarity even when clarity is limited, and foster connection during challenging times. It’s divided into 5 parts:
Part 1: Identifying How You Want To Show Up - Includes five mechanisms: reflect, temper responsiveness, be present and steady, manage your energy, and practice self-care and compassion
Part 2: Communicating Clarity Even When You Don’t Have Clarity - Includes examples of how to be clear and transparent even in the face of uncertainty or lack of personal clarity.
Part 3: Increasing Connection and Communication Opportunities to Maintain Morale - Includes how to counteract our current society’s increasing isolation, polarization, and degradation of interpersonal care.
Part 4: Create a Culture of Compassion - Includes 4 ways to enhance compassion at work, which lowers employee absenteeism and burnout; increases employee engagement; leads to greater teamwork and employee satisfaction; and girds resiliency.
Part 5: Communicate Meaning & Purpose to Maintain Morale - Includes 3 key practices.
4 Models of Giving Feedback
Forget the once-a-year “feedback sandwich” and pick up 4 more effective ways to create clear, specific, actionable, and effective feedback, with corresponding examples.
Feedback Readiness Checklist
A lot of the problems that we struggle with related to workplace politics are related to our difficulty giving and receiving feedback. Giving feedback is a common source of difficulty because it typically reminds us of the bad experiences we have had when it goes wrong. Without feedback, problems go unaddressed and continue to fester, serving as embers waiting to fuel conflict. An important step is to evaluate how ready you are to have the feedback discussion. Use this checklist to review the criteria for effective feedback. You might realize there are some additional steps you need to take first in order to create the right setting for effective feedback to occur!
Counteractive Reframing Mantras
There are times when we automatically tell ourselves things that are self-sabotaging and inaccurate and we don’t even realize we’re doing it. These messages are rooted in external messages we have received from society, or our parents and friends, about how we should behave or look. And they are negative, such as “I don’t belong here” or “I’m not good enough to be here.”
It’s important to catch these comments we tell ourselves, question whether they are accurate, and create some counteractive reframing mantras to help us see the issue from a different, more self-compassionate perspective.

Yes/No Audit
We often find ourselves saying “yes” to too many of the wrong things and then stretched too thin to take on the things we really want. This audit will help you regain a sense of agency and strategy over your decision-making and make it easier to say no.
